Levels of Charging
Charging an electric vehicle is complex as there are various types of chargers and different charging levels. It's important to know what sort of charging level you'll need, and any additional electrical work done prior to bringing home your new car. Here we will break down the different levels and how they affect your car charge time.
Level 1 (Standard 120v)
This is the slowest form of EV charging, as it uses a standard 120v outlet in your home. However, it is also the easiest and most common as it's already found in your house. This charger will take about 20 hours to completely charge an EV battery.
Level 2 (Enhanced 240v)
This is twice as powerful as the Level 1. Many homes have at least one 240v outlet for powerful appliances like washer/dryer machines. This charger will take about 6-14 hours to fully charge.
Level 3 (400v - 900v) (DC Fash Charge and Supercharging)
This is the most powerful and fastest charger. Unlike Level 1 and Level 2 charging that uses alternating current (AC), Level 3 charging uses direct current (DC). Very few residential locations have the high voltage supply that is required for level 3 charging.Â
